HATS-40 b is a sizzling hot Jupiter discovered back in 2018, orbiting the star HATS-40. Found using the transit method by the HATSouth survey, this giant gas planet was spotted as it gracefully danced in front of its star, causing a tiny, telltale dimming. Thanks to the keen eyes of the Apogee 4K CCD Sensor on the ground, astronomers caught this fiery world in action. Unlike the gas giants in our solar system, HATS-40 b orbits much closer to its star, making it a scorching world with a wild, tightly bound orbit. It’s a great reminder of how diverse and surprising planetary systems can be out in the cosmos!
